Windchilled is an adjective used to describe the sensation of cold caused by wind removing body heat from exposed skin. It denotes how cold a person feels in a given environment, rather than a separate physical temperature. The term is common in weather reporting and everyday language to convey how wind affects comfort and safety.

The effect arises from convection: moving air carries heat away from the body more quickly than still air, increasing heat loss. Higher wind speeds and lower ambient temperatures amplify windchill, making exposed skin feel colder than the thermometer would suggest. Wet skin or damp clothing can further increase cooling, while strong winds can compromise insulating layers by removing warm air that traps heat close to the body.

To quantify windchill, meteorologists use a wind chill index that combines air temperature with wind speed to estimate an equivalent calm-air temperature. Several scales exist worldwide, and while the indices do not measure physical temperature themselves, they provide a practical guide for clothing choices and safety. The windchill index is typically used to communicate risk and to inform outdoor activity planning, rather than to diagnose medical conditions.

Safety and health considerations: In windchilled conditions, the risk of frostbite increases for exposed areas such as the fingers, toes, ears, and nose, and prolonged exposure can raise the risk of hypothermia. Protective measures include wearing layered, windproof clothing, insulated gloves, a hat, and a face covering, and seeking shelter when wind chills are extreme. Staying dry and limiting time outdoors in severe windchill conditions also reduces risk.
