Whalederived refers to products or substances that originate from whales. Historically, whale products have been utilized for a variety of purposes. Ambergris, a waxy substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales, was highly prized in perfumery for its ability to fix scents and add a unique aroma. Whalebone, from the baleen of certain whale species, was used in corsetry, umbrellas, and other flexible structural applications.

The commercial whaling industry, which peaked in the 18th and 19th centuries, led to the decimation of many whale populations. Growing awareness of conservation concerns and the ethical implications of hunting these marine mammals, coupled with the development of petroleum-based products and synthetic materials, gradually led to a decline in the demand for many whalederived goods.
