wetblue

Wet blue, sometimes written as wetblue, is the blue, moist intermediate product of chrome tanning in leather production. It is produced when hides are treated with chromium(III) salts to form a chrome-tanned material that has not yet undergone finishing. The characteristic blue color and high moisture content come from the chromium tanning liquor.

Process and composition: After standard hide preparation (unhairing, fleshing, liming, deliming, bating, and often pickling), hides are immersed in a chromium(III) tanning bath. Chromium ions penetrate the collagen and form crosslinks, stabilizing the tissue. The resulting material is washed and stabilized and kept wet as it moves to the finishing stage; at this point it is sold as wet blue to finishing tanneries. Wet blue consists mainly of collagen bound to chromium(III) complexes, with substantial moisture and residual tanning solution. The pH and chemical balance are controlled to maximize penetration and tanning speed, while preserving elasticity for subsequent processing.

Uses: Finished leather is produced from wet blue through fatliquoring, dyeing, and surface finishing. Wet blue supplies are used for footwear uppers, leather goods, upholstery, and automotive interiors, depending on quality and processing.

Environmental and safety considerations: Chrome tanning generates waste streams requiring treatment. Modern tanneries implement effluent treatment and chromium recovery to limit releases. Chromium(III) is less toxic than hexavalent chromium, but improper processing can lead to Cr(VI) formation under oxidizing conditions, which raises health and environmental concerns. Wet blue remains a common intermediate in leather supply chains, bridging raw hides and finished leather.
