Welwitschia mirabilis is a remarkable desert plant native to the Namib Desert in Namibia and Angola. It is the sole species in the genus Welwitschia and the family Welwitschiaceae, making it a unique evolutionary entity. This plant is renowned for its extreme longevity, with individuals capable of living for over a thousand years, and some estimated to be as old as 2000 years.

The most striking feature of Welwitschia mirabilis is its appearance. It consists of a short, woody stem from which only two leaves grow throughout its entire life. These leaves are strap-like, grow continuously from the base, and often become split and frayed by the harsh desert winds, giving the impression of multiple leaves. The plant is dioecious, meaning there are separate male and female individuals. The reproductive structures are borne on cone-like strobili.

Welwitschia mirabilis has adapted to its arid environment in several ways. It obtains moisture primarily from the coastal fog that rolls in from the Atlantic Ocean, absorbing it through its leaves. Its deep taproot can also reach underground water sources. Despite its peculiar appearance and slow growth, it is a resilient survivor in one of the driest regions on Earth. The plant is a protected species in Namibia, and its cultivation outside its native range is restricted.
