A weight and pulley system is a simple machine consisting of a wheel on an axle or shaft, designed to support movement and change of direction of a taut cable or belt, or transfer of power between the shaft and cable or belt. The weight is typically attached to the end of a rope or cable that runs over the pulley. Pulleys can be used individually or in combination to achieve mechanical advantage, making it easier to lift heavy objects.

A single fixed pulley changes the direction of the force applied, but does not provide mechanical advantage. A movable pulley, on the other hand, is attached to the load and moves with it, reducing the force required to lift the load by half. Combinations of fixed and movable pulleys, known as a block and tackle, can provide significant mechanical advantage, allowing very heavy loads to be lifted with relatively little effort. The amount of mechanical advantage is determined by the number of rope segments supporting the load. The greater the number of supporting rope segments, the greater the mechanical advantage.
