Wavesripples is a term used to describe multiscale surface patterns that arise when larger gravity waves propagate over a surface that also supports shorter, capillary ripples. The concept emphasizes the coexistence and interaction of two distinct scale regimes: long-wavelength waves that set a moving background elevation and short-wavelength ripples that overlay this background. The resulting surface texture consists of modulated wave fronts, with amplitude and direction influenced by the underlying ripple field and wind input.

The physical basis lies in the dispersion of surface waves, which is governed by both gravity and surface tension. For small-amplitude waves on a fluid of depth h, the dispersion relation is ω^2 = (gk + (σ/ρ) k^3) tanh(kh), where ω is angular frequency, k is wavenumber, g is gravity, σ is surface tension, and ρ is density. Capillary ripples dominate at high k (short wavelengths), while gravity waves dominate at low k (long wavelengths). When these scales interact, energy can be exchanged or redistributed across the spectrum, affecting local amplitude, phase, and propagation direction.

Observation and study of wavesripples use techniques such as high-speed imaging, laser-based surface profiling, and Fourier or wavelet analysis to separate and quantify the different scales.
