Wavesand is a term used in coastal science to describe the coupled dynamics of ocean waves and sandy substrates in nearshore environments. It refers to how wave energy interacts with sand grains to shape beaches, dunes, and shoreline morphology over time.

In wavesand research, the central processes include wave-driven sediment transport, bedload movement along the seabed, suspension of finer particles, and alongshore and cross-shore redistribution of sand. These processes drive the development and migration of bedforms such as ripples and dunes, and influence shoreline elevation and extent.

Investigations combine field observations, laboratory experiments, and numerical models. Field work measures fluid velocities, bottom shear stress, water depth, and grain-size distributions; flume studies explore specific drivers under controlled conditions; and models couple wave evolution with sediment transport equations to predict shoreline change under various storm and tide scenarios.

Applications of wavesand knowledge include coastal protection planning, beach nourishment design, dune restoration, and climate adaptation strategies. A robust understanding supports shoreline resilience by anticipating erosion, accretion, and morphologic responses to changing wave climates and sea levels.

Terminology and status: the term wavesand is not yet a standardized field. Many researchers refer to it as wave–sand interactions or wave-induced sediment transport while focusing on nearshore morphodynamics. As a concept, it emphasizes the inseparable link between wave dynamics and sandy substrates.
