warmtelagen
Warmtelagen, a Dutch term translating to "heat layers" or "thermal layers," refers to the stratified distribution of temperature within a body of water, such as a lake or the ocean. This phenomenon occurs due to differences in water density, which are primarily influenced by temperature and, to a lesser extent, salinity. Sunlight warms the surface layers of the water more intensely than the deeper layers. As water warms, it becomes less dense and tends to stay on top of cooler, denser water below.
This stratification creates distinct thermal zones. The epilimnion is the uppermost, warmest, and most mixed layer.
