Võimsustormisüsteem refers to a power surge protection system. These systems are designed to safeguard electrical devices and infrastructure from sudden, excessive increases in voltage. Power surges can be caused by various events, including lightning strikes, power outages and restorations, or the operation of high-power electrical equipment within a building.

The primary function of a võimsustormisüsteem is to detect voltage spikes and divert the excess electrical energy away from connected equipment, thereby preventing damage. This diversion typically occurs through a component called a surge suppressor, which can be integrated into individual power strips, wall outlets, or installed as a main service entrance protection device for an entire building.

These systems work by employing non-linear components, such as metal oxide varistors (MOVs) or silicon avalanche diodes (SADs). Under normal operating voltages, these components have very high resistance and do not interfere with the power flow. However, when a voltage surge occurs, their resistance drops dramatically, creating a low-impedance path for the excess energy to be shunted to ground.
