Vízpipa, also known as hookah or shisha, is a water pipe used to smoke specially made tobacco that comes in different flavors. The practice of smoking vízipipa has a long history, originating in the Indian subcontinent and spreading to the Middle East and North Africa. Today, vízipipa lounges are popular social gathering spots in many parts of the world.

The vízipipa itself consists of several components: a bowl that holds the flavored tobacco, a heat source (usually charcoal) placed on top of the bowl, a body, a water bowl, and a hose through which the smoke is drawn. When the charcoal heats the tobacco, it produces smoke, which then passes through the water in the bowl. This water cools and filters the smoke before it reaches the smoker through the hose.

The flavored tobacco, often called shisha, is typically a mixture of tobacco, molasses or honey, and various flavorings. Popular flavors include mint, apple, grape, and double apple. The smoking session can last for an hour or more, and it is often a communal activity.

While often perceived as less harmful than cigarette smoking due to the water filtration, vízipipa smoke contains many of the same harmful toxins, including nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide. The smoke is also often inhaled more deeply and for longer periods. Health organizations advise caution regarding vízipipa use due to potential health risks, including addiction and respiratory problems.
