Vævskonstruktion refers to the process of creating woven fabrics. It involves interlacing two sets of yarns at right angles to each other. The yarn running lengthwise in the fabric is called the warp, and the yarn running crosswise is called the weft or filling. The way these yarns are interlaced determines the structure and properties of the resulting fabric.

There are three fundamental weave structures: plain weave, twill weave, and satin weave. In a plain weave, the weft yarn passes over and under each warp yarn in a simple alternating pattern. This creates a balanced fabric with good stability, like that found in cotton sheeting. A twill weave is characterized by diagonal lines on the fabric's surface, created by a staggered interlacing pattern where the weft yarn skips over two or more warp yarns. This structure often results in a more durable fabric with a distinctive diagonal rib, seen in denim. A satin weave involves a more complex interlacing where the weft yarn skips over several warp yarns, creating a smooth, lustrous surface with minimal points of contact between the warp and weft. This is common in fabrics like satin.

Beyond these basic types, numerous variations and combinations exist, allowing for a vast array of fabric textures, drape, and performance characteristics. The choice of yarn type, thread count, and the specific weave structure all contribute to the final appearance and functionality of the woven material.
