Værfronter, often translated as weather fronts, are boundaries between two air masses of different temperatures and densities. These boundaries are not sharp lines but rather zones where the transition occurs. When a colder, denser air mass advances and pushes into a warmer, less dense air mass, it is called a cold front. Cold fronts are typically associated with rapid weather changes, including sudden temperature drops, increased wind speeds, and often precipitation in the form of showers or thunderstorms. The air behind a cold front is generally drier and cooler.

Conversely, a warm front occurs when a warmer air mass advances and rides up over a colder air mass. This process is more gradual than with a cold front. Warm fronts are usually characterized by a slow rise in temperature, widespread and prolonged precipitation, often in the form of rain or snow, and a general decrease in visibility. The weather behind a warm front is typically warmer and more humid.

There are also occluded fronts, which form when a cold front overtakes a warm front. This results in the lifting of the warm air completely off the ground, creating a complex weather pattern. Stationary fronts occur when the boundary between two air masses does not move significantly, leading to prolonged periods of unsettled weather in the area. The passage of these fronts is a primary driver of weather patterns and changes experienced on Earth.
