Växelströmsladdare, also known as AC chargers, are devices used to supply electric power to electric vehicles (EVs) and other devices that operate on alternating current (AC). Unlike direct current (DC) chargers, which supply a constant voltage and current, AC chargers provide a varying voltage and current, mimicking the power supplied by the utility grid.

The primary advantage of AC chargers is their compatibility with the existing power infrastructure. They can be plugged into standard wall outlets or dedicated EV charging stations, making them convenient for both home and public use. AC chargers are typically slower than DC chargers, with charging times ranging from several hours to overnight, depending on the vehicle's battery capacity and the charger's power rating.

There are two main types of AC chargers: single-phase and three-phase. Single-phase chargers are more common and are suitable for most residential and public charging stations. They typically provide a power rating of up to 22 kW. Three-phase chargers are used in high-power charging stations and provide a power rating of up to 43 kW or more. Three-phase chargers require a dedicated circuit and are not suitable for standard wall outlets.

AC chargers use a rectifier to convert the AC power to DC, which is then used to charge the EV's battery. The charging process is managed by an onboard charger (OBC) in the EV, which communicates with the charger to control the power delivery and ensure safe and efficient charging.

AC chargers are widely used due to their convenience and compatibility with the existing power infrastructure. However, they may not be the fastest or most efficient charging option for EVs, especially for long-distance travel. For faster charging, DC fast chargers are often used.
