Cohesion refers to the attraction between molecules of the same substance, which is important for the liquid's internal structure.

When the adhesive forces between the liquid and the solid are stronger than the cohesive forces within the liquid, the liquid will spread out and wet the surface. This is observed when water spreads on clean glass. Conversely, if the cohesive forces of the liquid are stronger than the adhesive forces with the surface, the liquid will tend to bead up and minimize contact with the solid. An example of this is mercury on glass.
