Vätecyanidgas, also known as hydrogencyanid or HCN, is a colorless, volatile liquid at room temperature that readily evaporates into a gas with a faint, bitter almond-like odor. This odor is not universally detectable, as a significant portion of the population cannot perceive it due to a genetic trait. HCN is highly flammable and can form explosive mixtures with air.

It is a potent and rapidly acting poison. Inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption can lead to severe poisoning and death. The gas interferes with the body's ability to use oxygen at the cellular level, causing a condition known as cellular asphyxiation. Symptoms of exposure can include headache, dizziness, nausea, rapid breathing, and in severe cases, convulsions, coma, and respiratory arrest.

Industrially, vätecyanidgas is produced through several methods, including the Andrussow process, which involves the catalytic oxidation of methane and ammonia. It is a critical chemical intermediate used in the production of various organic compounds, such as plastics (like acrylonitrile for acrylic fibers), resins, pharmaceuticals, dyes, and pesticides. Historically, it has also been used as a fumigant for pest control in ships and buildings, though its use in this capacity is now heavily regulated or banned in many regions due to its extreme toxicity. Its production, handling, and transport are subject to strict safety protocols and international agreements due to its hazardous nature and potential for misuse.
