A värvusüsteemi, or color system, is a method for organizing and describing colors. These systems are essential in various fields, including art, design, printing, and digital imaging, allowing for consistent and reproducible color representation. Color systems typically define a color space, which is a specific range of colors that can be displayed or reproduced.

Common color systems include additive and subtractive models. Additive color systems, like RGB (Red, Green, Blue), are used for light-emitting displays such as monitors and televisions. When red, green, and blue light are combined in various proportions, they can create a wide spectrum of other colors. White light is produced when all three primary colors are at their maximum intensity.

Subtractive color systems, such as CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key/Black), are used in printing. These systems work by absorbing or subtracting light. Inks absorb certain wavelengths of light, and the remaining wavelengths are reflected, which is what we perceive as color. Combining cyan, magenta, and yellow inks theoretically produces black, but in practice, black ink is added for deeper blacks and better detail.

Other color systems exist, such as HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) and HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value), which describe colors in a more intuitive, human-centric way. Hue refers to the pure color, saturation to the intensity or purity of the color, and lightness or value to how bright or dark it is. These systems are often used in digital image editing software. The choice of color system depends heavily on the application and the medium being used.
