Värvisüsteemides are systematic methods for organizing and describing colors. They provide a framework for understanding color relationships, reproduction, and communication. Common color systems are based on different approaches to color theory and measurement.

One fundamental approach is the subtractive color system, primarily used in printing and pigment-based media. This system uses cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY) as primary colors. When mixed, these colors absorb (subtract) wavelengths of light, and the absence of all three theoretically results in black. Black is often included as K (key) in CMYK for richer dark tones.

The additive color system, conversely, is used in light-emitting devices like monitors and projectors. It employs red, green, and blue (RGB) as primary colors. When these colored lights are combined, they add wavelengths, and the presence of all three at full intensity produces white light.

Other widely recognized color systems include the Pantone Matching System (PMS), which provides a standardized way to specify and reproduce colors, particularly in graphic design and manufacturing. Hue, saturation, and lightness (HSL) or hue, saturation, and value (HSV) are models that describe colors in terms of their perceived qualities, offering a more intuitive way to manipulate colors digitally. These systems are crucial for ensuring consistency and accuracy in visual communication and artistic expression.
