Värviplekke, often translated as "color stain" or "dye stain" in English, refers to the undesirable discoloration of a surface caused by a colored substance. This phenomenon can occur on a variety of materials, including fabrics, wood, paper, and even skin. The intensity and permanence of a värviplekke depend on several factors, such as the type of coloring agent, the material being stained, and the duration of exposure.

In textiles, värviplekke are a common concern. Certain dyes, particularly those that are not colorfast, can transfer from one garment to another during washing, resulting in an unwanted hue on lighter fabrics. Similarly, spills of colored liquids like wine, coffee, or ink can leave stubborn värviplekke on clothing or upholstery. The nature of the fiber also plays a role; natural fibers like cotton and linen may absorb dyes more readily than synthetic materials.

Wood surfaces can also be susceptible to värviplekke. Direct contact with colored objects or spills can cause permanent discoloration.
