Värjäytymiskuviot, known in English as chromatophores, are specialized pigment-containing cells found in many animals, particularly amphibians, reptiles, fish, and cephalopods. These cells are responsible for the ability of these animals to change their skin color and pattern, a phenomenon known as camouflage or crypsis.

Chromatophores contain various types of pigments, such as melanins (black and brown), carotenoids (yellow and red), and pteridines (red and yellow). The arrangement and distribution of these pigments within the chromatophores, as well as the shape and size of the cells themselves, contribute to the overall color displayed by the animal.

The color change in animals with chromatophores is typically controlled by the nervous system and hormones. When stimulated, the chromatophores can expand or contract, altering the surface area covered by their pigments. For instance, a cephalopod can rapidly change its appearance by dispersing pigment granules within its chromatophores to reveal a specific color or pattern, or by concentrating the granules to become almost transparent. This allows for effective communication, mating displays, and predator avoidance.

The complexity of chromatophore systems varies greatly across species. While some animals have relatively simple color-changing abilities, others, like the octopus, possess highly sophisticated and rapid color and pattern manipulation capabilities. The study of chromatophores is crucial for understanding animal behavior, evolution, and the biological mechanisms of color production and perception.
