Välttämiskäyttäytyminen, often translated as avoidance behavior, refers to actions taken to prevent or minimize exposure to a feared stimulus or situation. This is a common response in many psychological conditions, most notably anxiety disorders. When an individual experiences significant distress or fear related to a particular object, situation, or thought, they may develop patterns of avoidance to cope. This coping mechanism, while providing temporary relief from anxiety, can paradoxically reinforce the fear in the long run. By consistently avoiding the feared stimulus, the individual never has the opportunity to learn that the feared outcome may not occur or that they can effectively manage their anxiety.

The cycle of avoidance can be particularly detrimental in conditions like phobias, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. For example, someone with a fear of flying might avoid air travel altogether, which may seem like a logical solution but prevents them from experiencing situations where their fear might be disproven. Similarly, an individual with social anxiety might avoid social gatherings, limiting their opportunities for positive social interactions and reinforcing the belief that social situations are inherently dangerous. Treatment for anxiety disorders often involves confronting these avoided situations, a process known as exposure therapy, to break the cycle of välttämiskäyttäytyminen and reduce the underlying fear.
