Välkysyke refers to a phenomenon observed in certain pulsed lasers, particularly those employing mode-locking techniques. It describes a transient, short-lived fluctuation in the output intensity of the laser pulse. Instead of a smooth, consistent pulse envelope, välkysyke manifests as a rapid, albeit minor, modulation or "flicker" within the pulse itself. This modulation can occur at high frequencies, often on timescales significantly shorter than the pulse duration.

The causes of välkysyke are complex and can be attributed to various factors within the laser cavity. Nonlinear optical effects, such as self-phase modulation and the Kerr effect, play a significant role. Instabilities in the gain medium or the saturable absorber, if present, can also contribute. Furthermore, external perturbations, like vibrations or thermal fluctuations, can sometimes induce or exacerbate välkysyke.

While välkysyke is typically a minor effect, it can be detrimental in applications requiring extreme pulse stability, such as high-precision metrology, quantum information processing, or sensitive spectroscopy.
