Väljalaskeklappide, commonly known in English as exhaust valves, are critical components within internal combustion engines. Their primary function is to control the expulsion of burnt gases from the combustion chamber into the exhaust system. These valves are typically located in the cylinder head of an engine and operate in conjunction with intake valves. When the piston moves upwards during the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve opens, allowing the high-pressure exhaust gases to be pushed out. Once the gases are expelled, the valve closes, sealing the combustion chamber for the next intake stroke.

The design and material of exhaust valves are crucial for their performance and longevity. They must withstand extremely high temperatures and pressures generated during the combustion process. Typically, exhaust valves are made from specialized steel alloys that offer excellent heat resistance and durability. The sealing surface of the valve, known as the valve face, must create a tight seal against the valve seat to prevent leakage of combustion gases when closed. Wear on either the valve face or the valve seat can lead to compression loss and reduced engine efficiency. The timing and duration of the valve's opening and closing are precisely controlled by the engine's camshaft mechanism.
