Välimuodot is a Finnish term used in science to denote intermediate forms, traits, or life-cycle stages that link two related states, species, or developmental phases. The term is common in discussions of biology, paleontology, and taxonomy.

In evolutionary biology, välimuodot refer to transitional forms that exhibit characteristics of both ancestral and descendant groups. They may appear as fossils or as phenotypic mosaics within populations. Such forms help illustrate gradual change and branching lineages over time. The concept emphasizes continuity rather than abrupt jumps, and it does not imply a linear path from simple to complex.

Within developmental biology, välimuodot can describe stages that occur between major life-cycle events, or morphological variants that bridge defined categories in a species.

Historically, the idea of transitional forms was central to Darwinian theory. Fossils such as Archaeopteryx and Tiktaalik are often cited as examples of välimuodot that connect major groups (dinosaurs and birds, fish and tetrapods).

Modern science recognizes that intermediate forms can be partial or mosaic and that numerous intermediate steps exist, some in the fossil record, others inferred from genetics and comparative anatomy. The term is used descriptively and should not be read as implying purposeful direction or teleology.
