Välimuistikehykset, or cache frames, are fundamental components in the design of modern computer systems, particularly in memory hierarchies. They represent the smallest addressable unit of data that can be transferred between the main memory and the cache memory. When a processor needs to access data, it first checks the cache. If the data is found in the cache (a cache hit), it can be retrieved very quickly. If the data is not found (a cache miss), the system must fetch a block of data, typically of size equal to a cache frame, from main memory and load it into the cache.

The size of a cache frame is a crucial design parameter that influences cache performance. A larger frame size can reduce the miss rate by fetching more potentially useful data at once, exploiting spatial locality. However, larger frames also increase the latency of fetching data from main memory and can lead to more wasted space if only a small portion of the fetched data is actually used (cache pollution). Conversely, smaller frames reduce fetch latency but may increase the miss rate if spatial locality is not well exploited.

Cache coherence protocols are also related to cache frames. These protocols ensure that all copies of a particular data block, which might exist in different caches or main memory, are kept consistent. When a frame is modified, the coherence protocol determines how that change is propagated to other locations to maintain data integrity. The management of these frames, including replacement policies (which frame to evict when new data needs to be loaded) and the tracking of valid and dirty bits, are key aspects of cache design.
