Välilevytyrä, known medically as a herniated disc or slipped disc, is a condition affecting the spine. It occurs when the soft, jelly-like center of an intervertebral disc pushes out through a tear in the tougher exterior. Intervertebral discs are cushions that sit between the vertebrae, allowing for spinal flexibility and absorbing shock.

The most common locations for välilevytyrä are the lower back (lumbar spine) and the neck (cervical spine). Symptoms can vary depending on the location and size of the herniation, as well as which nerves are compressed. Pain is a primary symptom, which can be localized to the back or neck, or radiate down an arm or leg. Numbness, tingling, and weakness in the affected limb are also common. In some cases, individuals may experience muscle spasms or a loss of bowel or bladder control, which can indicate a more severe condition requiring immediate medical attention.

The causes of välilevytyrä can include age-related wear and tear (degeneration), improper lifting techniques, sudden trauma, or repetitive strain on the spine. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and medical history, often supplemented by imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans.

Treatment options range from conservative approaches to surgical interventions. Conservative management often includes rest, pain medication, physical therapy, and epidural steroid injections. Physical therapy aims to strengthen supporting muscles, improve posture, and increase flexibility.
