Välilevytyrä, often referred to as a herniated disc or slipped disc, is a medical condition affecting the spine. It occurs when the soft, gel-like center of an intervertebral disc pushes through a tear in the tougher exterior layer. Intervertebral discs are small, rubbery cushions that sit between the bones of the spine, known as vertebrae. They act as shock absorbers and allow for flexibility.

The symptoms of a välilevytyrä can vary depending on its location and severity. Common symptoms include localized pain, which can be sharp or dull, and radiating pain that travels along the path of the affected nerve. This can manifest as sciatica, characterized by pain, numbness, or tingling down the leg. Weakness in the affected limb is also possible. In some cases, particularly if the herniation is large or presses on the spinal cord, more serious neurological symptoms may arise, though these are less common.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and review of medical history. Imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans are often used to confirm the diagnosis and visualize the herniated disc and its effect on surrounding nerves. Treatment approaches range from conservative measures to surgical intervention. Conservative treatments may include rest, pain medication, physical therapy, and injections. If these methods are ineffective or if severe neurological symptoms are present, surgery may be considered to relieve pressure on the nerve or spinal cord.
