vägledare

Vägledare is a Swedish term for a person who provides guidance and direction to others. The word derives from väg, meaning "path" or "way," and ledare, meaning "leader" or "guide." In professional use, a vägledare helps individuals find directions, make decisions, and access information and services. The term can refer to a person or, less commonly, to a service or resource that offers guidance.

In education, vägledare are often called studie- och yrkesvägledare (study and career guidance counselors). They work in schools and municipal adult education with students and adults. Their tasks include helping with course selection, study planning, information about higher education and vocational programs, job-market information, and arranging work experience or internships. They also support transitions to further studies or the workforce and liaise with teachers, parents, and social services.

In public services, vägledare help citizens navigate welfare, housing, financial aid, health and social services, and employment programs. They provide impartial information, assess needs, and coordinate with other agencies to connect people with appropriate support.

In cultural and tourist settings, vägledare may serve as guides or information staff who assist visitors with directions, program options, and practical arrangements. The term is less common for professional tour guides, who are usually described as guides.

Qualifications and training vary by country. In many contexts, vägledare have higher education in education, psychology, social work, or a related field, with training in guidance techniques and counseling. Continuing professional development is common.
