Vyyhtivärjäys, also known as bundle dyeing or clamp dyeing, is a textile dyeing technique where bundles of fabric are tied tightly together before being immersed in dye. This method is a variation of resist dyeing, similar in principle to tie-dyeing or batik, as it controls where the dye penetrates the fabric. The tightness of the binding is crucial to the final pattern, with looser bindings allowing more dye to seep in and create softer, blended color transitions, while tighter bindings result in sharper lines and more distinct color separation.

The process typically involves preparing the fabric, often pre-washing to remove any sizing or impurities. The fabric is then folded or scrunched in a desired pattern and bound very tightly with string, cord, or rubber bands. The bound fabric is then submerged in a dye bath, or dye can be applied directly to the fabric bundles in a more controlled manner. After the dyeing process is complete, the bindings are removed, revealing the unique patterns created by the dye’s interaction with the fabric’s resistance.
