vymýlet

Vymýlet is a Czech verbal form related to the act of thinking up or devising something. The standard infinitive is vymýšlet, and its perfective counterpart is vymyslet. The spelling vymýlet (without the š) is not the normative form in standard Czech and, if encountered, is usually a misspelling or regional variation. The verb belongs to the imperfective–perfective pair with vy- prefixing the verb myslet (to think).

Meaning and usage

Vymýšlet means to conceive, invent, or contrive an idea, plan, solution, or story. It often conveys the process of creation or ingenuity. In the reflexive form, vymýšlet si can mean to fabricate something for oneself, such as excuses or fictional details, or to imagine something. The perfective vymyslet emphasizes the completed act of coming up with something.

In present tense, common forms are: já vymýšlím, ty vymýšlíš, on/ona vymýšlí, my vymýšlíme, vy vymýšlíte, oni vymýšlí. Examples: “Vymýšlím nový plán.” “Vymyslel jsem lepší řešení.” Imperative: “Vymysli to hned!” “Vymýšlejte si alibi jen pro úsudek.” With si: “Vymýšlet si výmluvy” means to fabricate excuses.
