Vuoropumput, also known as alternating pumps or reciprocating pumps, are a type of positive displacement pump. They utilize a piston or plunger that moves back and forth within a cylinder to displace a fluid. This reciprocating motion creates a pressure difference that draws fluid into the cylinder during the suction stroke and forces it out during the discharge stroke.

The basic components of a vuoropumppu include a cylinder, a piston or plunger, suction and discharge valves, and a drive mechanism. The valves are crucial for controlling the flow of fluid, ensuring it moves in one direction only. As the piston moves away from the valves, the pressure inside the cylinder drops, opening the suction valve and allowing fluid to enter. On the return stroke, the piston moves towards the valves, closing the suction valve and opening the discharge valve, forcing the fluid out of the pump.

Vuoropumput can be single-acting, where fluid is pumped in one direction of piston travel, or double-acting, where fluid is pumped during both the forward and backward strokes of the piston, resulting in a more continuous flow. They are known for their ability to handle high pressures and viscous fluids, and they can deliver a precise amount of fluid with each stroke. Applications for vuoropumput are diverse, including water supply, oil and gas industries, chemical processing, and hydraulic systems. They are often chosen when a high discharge pressure is required or when accurate metering of fluid is necessary.
