vuokralla

Vuokralla is a Finnish term that means “on rent” or “rented.” It describes the status of using or possessing something under a rental agreement. The most common usage refers to living in a rental dwelling, such as an apartment or house. A person who rents is a vuokralainen, and the agreement between tenant and landlord is called a vuokrasopimus. The opposite of vuokralla is omistusasunto, meaning an owner-occupied dwelling.

In Finland the rental relationship is regulated mainly by the Laki asuinhuoneiston vuokrauksesta, commonly known as vuokralaki. A typical contract specifies the rent amount, payment terms, and whether the tenancy is fixed-term or open-ended. Rent can be adjusted over time, usually with proper notice and in line with agreed terms or index-based rules. A security deposit is common, often equivalent to one to three months’ rent.

Tenant and landlord responsibilities are defined by the law and the contract. The landlord must maintain the dwelling in a habitable condition and perform essential repairs, while the tenant is expected to pay the rent on time, keep the dwelling in good condition, and respect other residents. Subleasing or transferring the lease usually requires the landlord’s consent. Termination rules include notice periods and permissible grounds; failure to pay rent can lead to eviction proceedings.

Besides housing, vuokralla can refer to renting other goods or services, such as cars or equipment, though the housing context is the most common usage. The term is widely used in everyday language, media, and housing-related discussions in Finland.
