A vraagmechanisme, or demand mechanism, refers to the process by which demand for a good or service is expressed and ultimately met. In economics, it is the counterpart to the aanbodmechanisme (supply mechanism). Essentially, it describes how consumers, driven by their needs and desires, signal their willingness to purchase products at certain prices. This signaling can occur through direct purchases, expressions of interest, or participation in markets.

The effectiveness of a vraagmechanisme is influenced by several factors. These include the availability of information for consumers about products and prices, the ease with which they can access goods and services, and the presence of competition among suppliers. In competitive markets, a robust vraagmechanisme leads to suppliers adapting their offerings to meet consumer preferences, influencing production levels and product innovation. Conversely, in less competitive environments, the vraagmechanisme might be weaker, with consumers having less influence on what is produced.

Different market structures exhibit varying vraagmechanismen. In perfect competition, consumers have ample choice and can easily switch between suppliers, making the demand mechanism very sensitive to price and quality. In a monopoly, the consumer's ability to express demand effectively is significantly limited, as there is only one supplier to turn to. Understanding the vraagmechanisme is crucial for analyzing market dynamics, predicting economic behavior, and formulating effective economic policies.
