Vormfout, translated as form error, is a Dutch term used in engineering to describe a deviation of a surface, contour, or edge from its intended geometric form. It is a subset of geometric tolerancing and metrology, focused on the accuracy of shape rather than size alone. It is relevant in design, manufacturing, and inspection of mechanical parts.

In practice, form errors are specified and measured relative to nominal geometry and may occur independently of size tolerances. Common manifestations include flatness, straightness, circularity, cylindricity, and surface profile deviations. The term is used across manufacturing methods including machining, casting, additive manufacturing, and finishing.

Causes and effects: They arise from tool wear, deflection, thermal distortion, residual stresses, fixture errors, or measurement setup. Form errors can influence function, fit, wear, sealing, and assembly.

Measurement and standards: They are evaluated with metrology tools such as coordinate measuring machines (CMM), profilometers, or optical scanners. Standards and GD&T frameworks (ISO 1101, ASME Y14.5) provide how to specify form tolerances and how to interpret measurements. In practice, the form tolerance is considered alongside size and positional tolerances to ensure proper assembly.

Mitigation: Design for manufacturability, appropriate process parameters, workholding, thermal control, and calibration reduce form errors; post-processing compensation or corrective machining can be used to bring parts within spec.
