Vorangestelltes is a term used in German linguistics to describe a constituent that has been moved to the leftmost position of a clause, i.e., placed in the Vorfeld before the finite verb. It derives from the past participle vorangestellt (placed in front) and is used as a label for fronted material rather than as a separate grammatical category. The fronted element can be a time or place adverbial, a noun phrase (object or subject), or even a whole clause.

In the standard German sentence structure, the finite verb often occupies the second position (V2). Elements that occupy the first position before the verb are described as vorangestelltes. This fronting serves pragmatic or discourse purposes, such as topicalization, emphasis, or contrast. Examples include: Gestern hat er den Brief erhalten, where the temporal adverbial Gestern is the vorangestelltes element; Den Brief hat er gestern erhalten, where the fronted object Den Brief is the vorangestelltes Objekt; and Wenig hat er zu berichten, with a fronted element that highlights the extent of information.

Vorangestelltes can also appear with entire clauses or larger phrases fronted for emphasis in more complex sentences, contributing to a given/new information structure or to focus the listener’s attention. The exact form—whether as a nominalized phrase, an adjective phrase, or a full clause—depends on the syntactic and discourse context. In scholarly descriptions, the concept is closely linked to the Vorfeld (the left periphery of the sentence) and to notions of topic and focus.
