In simpler terms, if you were to place a tiny, massless particle in the fluid, a voolujoonts would show the path that particle would take if it were to remain stationary in time.

The direction of a voolujoonts at any point indicates the direction of the fluid's velocity at that point. The spacing between voolujoonts can also provide information about the speed of the fluid; where voolujoonts are closer together, the fluid is moving faster, and where they are farther apart, the fluid is moving slower. This principle is analogous to how contour lines on a map represent changes in elevation.
