In law and ethics, voluntary consent is typically required for the legitimacy of agreements, medical treatments, and participation in experiments. Coercion, threats, or significant pressure can undermine voluntariness. Undue influence includes exploiting vulnerability or dependencies; inducements that render the choice effectively predetermined may also compromise voluntariness. Distinctions are made between voluntary actions and those constrained by physical force, formal coercion, or deception.

In medical ethics, informed consent must be voluntary, informed, and competent, with adequate understanding of risks, benefits, and alternatives.
