Voivod is a Canadian heavy metal band formed in 1983 in Jonquière, Quebec. The band's initial lineup consisted of Denis "Snake" Bélanger on vocals, Denis "Piggy" D'Amour on guitar, Jean-Yves "Blacky" Thériault on bass, and Michel "Away" Langevin on drums. Voivod emerged from the thrash metal scene but quickly developed a unique sound characterized by progressive song structures, unconventional riffs, and science fiction-themed lyrics.

Their early albums, such as "War and Pain" (1984) and "Rrröööaaarrr" (1986), were raw and aggressive, showcasing their thrash metal roots. With "Killing Technology" (1987) and "Dimension Hatröss" (1988), the band began to incorporate more experimental elements, hinting at their future progressive and technical leanings. This stylistic evolution continued with "Nothingface" (1989), which is often cited as a landmark album for its complex arrangements and psychedelic influences.

Throughout their career, Voivod has maintained a dedicated cult following. The band experienced lineup changes over the years, with guitarist Piggy's passing in 2005 being a significant loss. However, they have continued to release music and tour, with Away and Snake remaining as core members. Voivod's distinct musicality and enduring presence have made them influential figures in extreme and progressive metal.
