Jonquière

Jonquière is a former city in Quebec, Canada, located in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. It was amalgamated with the city of Saguenay on January 1, 2002, along with Chicoutimi, La Baie, and Saint-Félicien, forming the new municipality of Saguenay. Jonquière was situated on the Au Sable River, a tributary of the Saguenay River.

The area was originally settled in the mid-19th century, with industrial development taking root in the early 20th century. Jonquière became known for its pulp and paper industry, as well as aluminum production, due to the availability of hydroelectric power from the Saguenay River. The city grew steadily, attracting a diverse workforce and developing a distinct community identity.

As part of Saguenay, Jonquière now functions as one of its four boroughs. It retains its industrial heritage and continues to be a significant economic center for the region. The borough is characterized by its industrial zones, residential areas, and recreational facilities. Its proximity to natural landscapes, including forests and the Saguenay Fjord, offers opportunities for outdoor activities. Jonquière's history is intertwined with the industrialization of Quebec and the development of the Saguenay region.
