Vodopad, meaning a waterfall, is a term used in several Slavic languages to describe a natural feature where a river or stream drops vertically or over a series of steps. Waterfalls occur where flowing water meets a point of resistance such as a resistant rock layer, an escarpment, or a change in bedrock gradient, and may form through differential erosion, tectonic uplift, or glacial activity.

Waterfalls are commonly classified by the way water descends: plunge (water loses contact with the bed as it falls), cascade (water maintains contact with rock as it descends, often over a slope), horsetail (water maintains some contact and fans out along the rock face), or segmented (the flow divides into multiple threads). Some waterfalls are tiered with a sequence of drops.

Heights vary from a few meters to hundreds of meters; flow rate and seasonal variation affect appearance and pool formation. The spray creates mist and supports distinctive microhabitats; the area around a vodopad often hosts specialized vegetation and animal life. Many are located in canyons or protected areas. Safety concerns include slippery rocks and strong currents.

Waterfalls attract tourists and have cultural significance in many regions. Some vodopods are protected as natural monuments or within national parks. Hydroelectric projects and damming can alter water flow and ecosystem; conservation efforts aim to preserve the natural state and prevent erosion of surrounding banks.
