Vocal recording is the process of capturing human voice for music, film, broadcasting, or other media using a microphone and related audio equipment. It spans studio and field environments and aims for either a transparent, natural result or a strengthened, stylistic character. The choice of microphone, signal chain, room acoustics, and performer technique all shape the final sound.

Core gear includes a microphone, stand, pop filter, an audio interface or preamp, a digital audio workstation for capture and editing, and monitoring headphones or speakers. Microphones are categorized as dynamic, condenser, or ribbon. Condenser mics are common in studios for their sensitivity; dynamic mics handle loud sources well; ribbon mics offer a smooth, vintage tone. The preamp and interface determine gain and noise performance, while phantom power may be required for condenser capsules.

Recording technique involves microphone placement and room treatment. Proximity affects bass response and intimacy; distance and angle influence sibilance and off-axis color. Pop filters help reduce plosives, and acoustic treatment or isolation booths control reflections. Proper gain staging minimizes noise and distortion, and performers are coached to maintain consistent vocal level and expression.

Workflow typically includes multiple takes, followed by comping, editing, and processing. In processing, engineers may apply equalization, compression, de-essing, noise reduction, and effects such as reverb or delay to suit the mix. File formats for capture are usually WAV or AIFF at 44.1 or 48 kHz and 16–24-bit depth; delivery formats may include compressed audio like MP3 or AAC.

Quality in vocal recording depends on mic choice, accurate gain staging, acoustic control, and a performing vocal. In professional contexts, metadata, labeling, and proper rights management are also important considerations.
