Typically, a vloerluik consists of a wooden or sometimes metal frame with a lid that lies flush with the surrounding floor when closed. The lid is usually hinged or fitted with a pull handle or ring for opening. The surrounding floor often uses matching floorboards or finishing to hide the mechanism, preserving the room’s appearance.

Historically, vloerluiken have been used in Dutch and Flemish architecture to provide discreet access to cellars and storage, or to pass items between floors in multi-story houses and workshops. They were practical solutions in dense urban settings where additional staircases were impractical.
