Vleermuis is the Dutch word for bat. Bats are flying mammals belonging to the order Chiroptera. They are the only mammals capable of sustained flight. There are over 1,400 species of bats worldwide, making up about 20% of all mammal species.

Bats are found on every continent except Antarctica. They inhabit a wide range of environments, from tropical rainforests to deserts and even urban areas. Their diet varies greatly depending on the species. Some bats are insectivores, feeding on insects, while others are frugivores (fruit-eaters), nectarivores (nectar-eaters), or even carnivores, preying on small animals like frogs or fish. A few species are hematophagous, feeding on blood, but these are rare and primarily found in Central and South America.

Many bats are nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. They often navigate and hunt using echolocation, emitting high-frequency sounds and interpreting the returning echoes to perceive their surroundings. While some bats have poor eyesight, many species have good vision, especially those that feed on fruit or nectar.

Bats play important ecological roles. Insectivorous bats help control insect populations, which can be beneficial for agriculture and human health. Frugivorous bats are important seed dispersers, helping to regenerate forests. Nectarivorous bats are vital pollinators for many plants.

Despite their ecological importance, bats often face negative perceptions due to myths and folklore. However, understanding their diverse roles and adaptations reveals them as fascinating and crucial components of ecosystems.
