Vitrohedelmöitys, commonly known as in vitro fertilization or IVF, is a medical procedure used to treat infertility. It involves the fertilization of an egg by sperm outside of the body, in a laboratory setting. The process typically begins with ovarian stimulation, where a woman is given medications to encourage the production of multiple eggs. Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved from the ovaries through a minor surgical procedure.

Simultaneously, sperm is collected from the male partner or a donor. The eggs and sperm are then combined in a culture dish in the laboratory. Fertilization is monitored, and if successful, the resulting embryo(s) are cultured for a few days. After a suitable growth period, one or more healthy embryos are transferred into the woman's uterus with the hope of achieving a pregnancy.
