Virusdriven is a descriptor used in biology to indicate that a process, condition, or outcome is primarily caused or shaped by viral infection or viral genetic elements. The term is common in virology, oncology, and microbiology, and it is applied to disease processes as well as evolutionary or ecological dynamics where viruses play a central role. It is not a formal diagnosis but a qualitative characterization of viral influence.

Mechanisms of virus-driven effects include direct transformation of host cells by viral oncogenes, insertional mutagenesis from integrating retroviruses, and chronic inflammation that promotes tissue damage and carcinogenesis. Viruses can also modulate the immune response to favor persistence, enabling clonal expansion of infected cells. Additional routes include alterations in host gene expression through latency programs, epigenetic modifications, and the activity of viral noncoding RNAs. In bacteria, bacteriophages can confer new virulence traits via lysogenic conversion, altering pathogenic potential without ongoing phage infection.

In humans, several cancers are described as virus-driven due to viral etiology or viral-mediated mechanisms. Examples include HPV-driven cervical and oropharyngeal cancers; HBV and HCV–associated hepatocellular carcinoma; EBV-associated Burkitt lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma; Merkel cell polyomavirus–driven Merkel cell carcinoma; and Kaposi sarcoma–associated herpesvirus in Kaposi sarcoma and related diseases. Outside oncology, phage-mediated changes in bacterial communities and virulence factor repertoires are also considered virus-driven phenomena.

Research and public health relevance lies in vaccines, antivirals, and cancer prevention strategies that target virus-driven pathways, as well as careful interpretation of causal relationships in observational studies.
