virilize
Virilize refers to the development or exaggeration of male secondary sexual characteristics in an individual. This can occur naturally, such as during puberty in males, or be induced by hormonal influences. In females, virilization can manifest as the development of features typically associated with males, such as increased facial and body hair, deepening of the voice, and a more muscular physique. These changes are usually caused by an excess production of androgens, the primary male sex hormones. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or certain tumors can lead to increased androgen levels and subsequent virilization in women. In some medical contexts, virilization might be intentionally induced or managed through hormone therapy, for example, in transgender men or for specific therapeutic purposes. The term is derived from "virile," meaning characteristic of or befitting a man.
