Vinyl film, commonly referred to as self-adhesive vinyl, is a flexible polymer sheet used for decals, signs, and decorative graphics. It consists of a vinyl base, an adhesive layer, and a release liner. Most vinyl films are PVC-based, though some specialty films use non-PVC substrates. The film can be printed, cut, or pre-cut for custom applications and is offered in various thicknesses and finishes, including gloss, matte, satin, metallic, and transparent variants. Many products are coated with a protective overlaminate to improve abrasion resistance and UV stability.

Two main production types are cast and calendered. Cast vinyl is produced by casting liquid polymer into a thin film and is prized for exceptional conformability and long-term durability on complex curves. Calendered vinyl is extruded and calendered into a thicker sheet; it tends to be less conformable and is often more cost-effective for shorter-term graphics. Adhesives range from permanent to removable, with liners made of paper or PET. Removal is typically aided by heat; some residues may require solvents or adhesive removers.

Applications include vehicle graphics and wraps, fleet branding, storefront and wall graphics, window branding, signage, and interior decoration. Films are formulated to adhere well to smooth and lightly textured surfaces such as painted walls, glass, metal, and plastic, though success depends on surface preparation and environmental conditions. In use, installers clean and dry substrates, apply with squeegees and heat, and may apply a clear laminate for added durability. Durability varies by product and environment, commonly several years for cast films and shorter times for calendered ones.
