világos

Világos is the Hungarian name for the village and commune of Șiria, located in Arad County in western Romania. The name Világos, meaning bright or clear in Hungarian, is used especially in historical contexts; in Romanian the place is called Șiria.

Geography and landmarks: Șiria lies in the western part of Romania, near the city of Arad. The area features the hilltop ruin of Șiria Fortress (Cetatea Șiria), a medieval fortification that is a notable local landmark and part of the region’s historical heritage.

History: The name Világos is closely associated with the 1849 Battle of Világos, which occurred near the village during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–49. After their defeat at Temesvár, the Hungarian forces commanded by General Artúr Görgey were pursued by Austrian troops under Field Marshal Julius Jacob, Count Haynau, and surrendered at Világos on 13 August 1849. The surrender effectively ended the Hungarian revolution and led to renewed Austrian consolidation and reprisals in the region.

Today: The locality is an official commune in Arad County, while Világos remains the historical Hungarian exonym for Șiria and appears in Hungarian-language maps and historical documents. The area is part of the Crișana region in Romania and reflects the cross-cultural history of Transylvania and western Romania.
