Vilkutusjärjestelmät (ignition systems) are essential components in internal combustion engines, tasked with igniting the air-fuel mixture to initiate combustion and produce mechanical power. Their primary role is to generate a high-voltage spark at the precise moment to ensure efficient energy conversion from fuel to motion.

Two main types exist: conventional spark-ignition systems, which utilize a distributor to route high-voltage electricity from the coil to the spark plugs, and electronic ignition systems, which replace the distributor with a control module that uses sensors (e.g., crankshaft or camshaft positioners) to manage timing. Electronic systems offer improved precision, reduced wear, and better adaptability to modern engine designs.

Key components include ignition coils (to amplify voltage), spark plugs (the ignition point), and in electronic setups, a control unit (ECU) that processes sensor data. Distributors in conventional systems ensure the correct spark plug receives voltage at the optimal time. Over time, ignition systems have transitioned from mechanical configurations to fully electronic designs, enhancing efficiency, lowering emissions, and supporting advanced technologies like direct fuel injection and turbocharging.
