Viljastumiseks, often translated as fertilization or conception, is the biological process by which a male gamete fuses with a female gamete to form a new cell, the zygote. This is a fundamental step in sexual reproduction, leading to the development of a new individual in many organisms. In humans and other mammals, this process typically occurs within the female reproductive tract.

The journey of fertilization begins with the release of an ovum (egg cell) from the ovary during ovulation. This ovum then travels through the fallopian tube, where it may encounter sperm cells. Sperm cells, produced by the male, are motile and are deposited into the female reproductive system during sexual intercourse. Millions of sperm begin their journey towards the ovum, but only a select few will reach it.

For fertilization to occur, a single sperm must penetrate the outer layers of the ovum. This penetration triggers a chemical reaction that prevents other sperm from entering. Once a sperm successfully enters the ovum, the genetic material from both gametes combines. The sperm's nucleus, containing half the number of chromosomes, fuses with the ovum's nucleus, which also contains half the number of chromosomes. This fusion restores the full diploid number of chromosomes, creating a zygote.

The zygote then begins a series of rapid cell divisions, a process known as cleavage, as it travels down the fallopian tube towards the uterus. If implantation occurs successfully in the uterine wall, pregnancy begins, and the zygote will continue to develop into an embryo and subsequently a fetus.
