vijzels

Vijzels are a small, amphibious mammal that has been described only in the scientific reports of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. According to the primary literature, they belong to the family Hydrocyonidae and are found in the shallow marshes of the southern plateau of the fictional continent of Eldoria. The species, usually named Vijzelus diminutus, is characterized by a dense, webbed fur coat that allows efficient swimming in brackish waters, and a tail that bears a slight, translucent dorsal fin.

Individuals average 15 centimeters in length and display a muted palette of olive and brown.

Vijzels feed primarily on aquatic insects, molluscs, and the algae that grows on submerged vegetation. They construct simple nests of reeds on the periphery of their habitat, and are noted to exhibit cooperative breeding behaviours in which non-breeding adults assist in the defence of eggs and fry.

Ecologists have noted that vijzels can act as a keystone species in their ecosystem. In periods of drought, the mammals migrate in small herds to floodplains, contributing to seed dispersion and pollination of wetland flora. However, their populations decline with increased water pollution and sedimentation due to expanding agricultural activity in the region.

Within Eldorian lore, vijzels are occasionally referenced in folklore as symbols of resilience; a number of local artists have painted them as a motif in public murals.
